The Baker Mayfield Era of The Browns Arrives! by Matt Higgins

Can one player save a franchise and your fantasy team?

The Browns were on their way to losing yet another game against one of the worst offenses in football.  The Jets number one pick Sam Darnold was highly ineffective and could only complete the easiest of passes.  Luckily for him he only had to beat the lowly Browns and their years of games without a victory.  Tyrod Taylor was running for his life, throwing under thrown balls, and hadn’t scored an offensive point when he was knocked out of the game late in the second half.  Then everything changed.

The Baker Mayfield Era began.  He immediately ran the two-minute drill and put up the Browns first points of the game.  Carlos Hyde came to life eventually running for almost 100 yards and scoring two touchdowns.  Landry was still the main target in the offense, however, Bakers ball had so much zip that the sure handed “Bless um” dropped a wide-open pass off his shoulder pads.  Names like Higgins and Njoku finally became relevant.  Also, it’s safe to say that Baker Magic has enough juice to put Callaway into starter status for fantasy owners in need of WR help.  Everything was different.

So now what?  Expect Carlos Hyde’s YPC to go from 2.8 to 3.8.  His command of the backfield is astonishing receiving almost all the carries.  On a side note, congratulations Carlos on the birth of your first born, “Carlos Jr” born just hours after the game.  Unfortunate that even with his dad being an accomplished NFL running back people will still associate his name with curly fries and a Coke.  Jarvis Landry went from being a PPR monster to being a PPR monster with TD upside.   Landry and Baker had obvious chemistry and it is amazing how Jarvis still finds a way to get open considering the attention he should be receiving.  I like Landry as a top 15 WR play as long as Baker Mayfield is starting.  Callaway was also taking the top off the defense in this game.  He showed some shaky hands, but Baker is good enough to support two fantasy WR’s in this offense.  Callaway should be a player you can trust moving forward.  Also, David Njoku should now be rostered in all leagues.

Baker Mayfield has turned a multiyear fantasy wasteland into what could be fantasy gold.  Baker threw for 200 yards and 2 TD’s in just over a half of football, the kicker signed off the street made two long field goals, Jarvis Landry turned back the clock, and Carlos Hyde matched his season production totals in a game.  Look for this production to continue as long as Baker Mayfield is the Browns quarter back.  This may be the best team in the division.  This is probably an offense that you want a piece of.
