Rhinoplasty (nose job) is a surgical procedure that reshapes your nose to improve its function or aesthetics, or both. It can reduce the size of the nose, narrow the nostrils, and make the tip more pointed. Rhinoplasty can also increase the size of a small nose and change its shape.
A common goal of rhinoplasty is to correct defects such as:
- Nose size that’s too small or large
- Hump on the bridge of your nose
- Wide bumps on your nasal bones (that may be visible when you smile)
- Flaring nostrils
Rhinoplasty is most often done on adults but can be performed on children if needed.
It’s important to understand that not all noses can be corrected. The surgeon will review your medical history, examine your face and nose in detail, and discuss your goals before recommending a procedure. For example, if your nasal bones are too large or prominent, they may not be able to be reduced.
Nose Surgery Procedure
The procedure itself takes about two hours. You’ll be given local anesthesia, which means you won’t feel any pain during the operation. The surgeon will make an incision inside your nose and remove tissue from both sides of the cartilage to reshape it. He or she may also make a cut along the columella (the thin piece of skin that connects both nostrils) to reshape it as well. At times, bone is removed from your forehead or chin to help reshape your nose. Once the cartilage and skin have been reshaped, the incisions are closed with stitches or bandages. Your nose may be swollen and sore for a few days after surgery, but you can usually return to work within a week or so.
You may also experience some pain and discomfort for the first few days after surgery. The stitches will be removed about two weeks after surgery, but you’ll probably need to wear nose splints for up to six weeks after the procedure so that your new shape stays put.
If you’re considering rhinoplasty, talk to a board-certified plastic surgeon about your options. They can help you decide whether surgery is right for you and answer any questions you have about the procedure.
